R.I.P. Halloween in France. (Born 2007- Died 2009)

Does this make any sense to you: The French hate Halloween because it’s American, but they inhale Le Beeg-Mac like high cholesterol is the new black?

Whatever. Don't get me started.

We don’t get to celebrate Halloween here in Frogland. I got excited about 3 years ago when it seemed that the Frogs were on the verge of adopting it, but then it just fizzled out. I used to be really bitter about lack of Halloween in France, but now I’m over it. In fact this year I forgot, and we didn’t get any trick-or-treaters anyway.

BUT, one very charming reader (*cough*Jamila*cough, cough*) sent me this photo from the movie “The Chronicles of Riddick”.

Riddick

Would this not make the most bad-ass Halloween Couples Costume ever for FrenchBoy and I? Or hell we could just go out to dinner dressed up like that. The big manly metallic shoulder pads might be tough to pull off, but we could give it a try.
Also side note: I lurve "The Chronicles of Riddick" because:

A.) I love Thandie Newton long time.

B.) The fact that Vin Deisel has a million-dollar acting career and Ralph Macchio does not, is just sick and awesome.
And oh, oh, my favorite line from the movie: "Now look at you... all back of the bus and sh*t."
Priceless.

I'm a big fan,love all your posts.

Halloween isn't celebrated much in Norway too, they say it isn't a Norwegian tradition and look at the people who celebrate it as traitors..so sad.

Would absolutely love it if you went to fancy restaurant like that. They would probably just shrug and say "Américaine!"

I'm sure you get "Do you know you look like Thandie Newton??" a lot :)

I just moved to France (Grenoble) two months ago and I was so confused about this whole Halloween situation here. I got excited because there was an advertisement for a "Manoir Hante". Well, my excitement qickly faded away when I went inside and saw that it was just a discoteque with some fake spider webs thrown on the ceiling. Next year I won't waste my time...

I didn't grow up celebrating Halloween in Barbados so it's neither here nor there to me.

Your hubby and Karl Urban could be cousins.

I've never understood why the Germans get all into Halloween. It started off as yet another excuse for 20-something office types to get their drink and act the fool, all while dressed up in weird ish. Now between all the pumpkins and scarecrows, it's marching its way into the hearts of my Teutonic neighbors. Kids have Halloween parties at school, folks have big Halloween bashes at discos, and there are even some Halloween office parties.

Me? I am not too much into this. It's like when Americans try to do Oktoberfest. *kanyeshrug*

I never get any candy for the few trick 'n treaters that come out. Mostly they are really small kids, so I give them €0.50 a piece. I won't be the neighborhood meany and just pass out little bags of walnuts from our tree...

Some b*tch did throw a pumpkin into our garden, though, and I am still p.o.'d about that!

Halloween has pretty much fizzled out here in the Loiret, too.
But I love the outfits! They are de rigeur for NY's Eve.

I think you're a bit harsh on French people. I personnaly believe that we don't celebrate Halloween simply because it is not french. It's not because it's american. It's not part of our culture. For instance, why don't american people celebrate le "poisson d'avril" ? I have mixed feelings about celebrating Halloween in France. On one hand I think it would only be a way to try to look more and more like americans -which I think is pathethic but people in america don't have this kind of concern, they don't try to imitate anyone since they're "the shit". On the other hand I like the idea of getting dressed up and partying. My brother has celebrated Halloween and I think it's super fun. Still what I don't like about Halloween in France is that it mainly aims to make people spend money. But most of all, I think we don't have any reason to celebrate Halloween. I mean, I don't even know why Americans celebrate it ! For French people it's just something we see in american series -that's why it seems so "cool"...

There are so many reasons that I enjoy your blog and now you have given me another reason. I love me some Vaako and Dame Vaako. Karl Urban is lovely. Thandie Newton as Dame Vaako was great. When she said "Flawless" & then that scream of "Nooooooo!", when the plan did not work. Ah, so good.

Those would make great costumes for you & Frenchboy.

You really do look a lot like Thandie. I've thought that since I first started visiting your wonderful blog several months ago.

I went to Prague from Nantes for Halloween. The Czech were sort of into it-- but compared to how Iowa does halloween... it was somewhat sad.

Don't worry, it will be back... Halloween will make its grand return to France in a few years... only to fizzle out yet again....
