Madame Snaggle-tooth Update.

Those of you who have been following my 3Suisse and La Redoute adventures will be interested in this little update. This morning I had no choice but to go back to my local tabac to pick up one back-ordered duvet cover. Of course Madame Snaggle-tooth was there as usual. But get this---she was wearing an Hermès scarf!

Ok, I firmly believe that much of life's misery results from comparing ourselves to others, and thus I try quite hard not to do that, but dammit! How the hell can tabac cashiers afford Hermes when I'm still a window licker*?

Whatever. I don't know what to make of all this.
*"leche vitrine" is a French expression that literally means "window licking". It's almost the equivalent of the American expression "window shopping."

A) Maybe we should start working in a tabac
B) Maybe she owns the tabac, there is a good profit marin in sin
C) Maybe a package that no one ever mastered the art of picking up
D) Maybe she has a secret lover in high places?

I often wonder about these kinds of things, too -- when I see gals in the métro carrying fancy Dior or Gucci bags, etc... But I figure either 1) they were gifts from comfortably-well-off men, or maybe even from family! or 2) they're fakes!

You never know: those scarves can probably easily be made into rip-offs... Do you think it was definitely a real one? It's so hard to tell anymore...

I like Travel's options above, though -- especially D! And heck, even C sounds like a good possibility to me too!

Perhaps it isn't real? Perhaps she stole it from someone?

'window licking' seems more to the point for what i do, as opposed to window shopping. and it sounds much more elegant than salivating at the mouth.

LOL @ all of your responses. You guys slay me!

At first I thought it was a fake, but then after a bit of reflection I reasoned that it probably IS real.

I have this theory that the people that can _least_ afford small luxury items are in fact the people who DO actually buy small luxury items. Does that make any sense?

I mean I can actually afford a Hermes scarf, but no way in hell am I gonna actually get one. What am I gonna do? Wear it around my house all day like an idiot?

On the other hand, when I lived in Brooklyn, I had work colleagues who had no problem spending $900 on a pair of shoes eventhough I KNOW they only made 30Gs a year and paid $1500 a month for rent.

So....whatever's clever.

p.s. If I DO ever end up buying a Hermes scarf, I will wear it around my f*cking head like a pirate and buy a matching parrot cuz.....that's what's up!

(Note to self: Stop drinking.)

Maybe she's doing that French thing of owning few clothes but very good ones??

Please. She stole that sh*t from another unsuspecting expat who couldn't figure out how to retrieve her purchase from the tabac.

P.S. Thanks for becoming my myspace friend :)

Madame K - you crack me up!

I still think it could be a knock-off though. I read an incredible thing the other day, to the effect that 99% of items credibly stamped LVMH are counterfeit.

I hope you do get a Hermes scarf though, you'll look a treat as a pirate.

Little does this petasse know that she has become an international celeb of sorts.
